Roblox Turned 20: What I Remember From Playing Since 2015

Roblox turned 20 on September 1, 2026. I've been playing since 2015, so I've been around for more than half of those 20 years.

This post is a short timeline of the biggest Roblox changes from 2015 to 2026, with my own memories added where they fit. Everything here is current as of September 30, 2026, two days after the official anniversary event, The Hunt: Roblox 20, ended.

My Roblox avatar from 2015: the blue outfit with the golden crown. It's still my favorite look.

Where Roblox came from

Roblox was started by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, and the name Roblox was picked in early 2004. Before that, the project was called DynaBlocks, and GoBlocks was also on the table.

The public launch came on September 1, 2006. Roblox counts that day as its birthday, so it's where the 20 years start.

How Roblox celebrated turning 20

The main event was The Hunt: Roblox 20. Roblox announced it on September 16, 2026, and it ran from September 17 to 28.

You started at "Year Zero" and worked forward through Roblox history, doing quests in games from each year. The 20 featured games were:

Crossroads, Sword Fights on the Heights IV, Rocket Arena, Chaos Canyon, Work at a Pizza Place, Natural Disaster Survival, Base Wars, Apocalypse Rising 2, Murder Mystery 2, Lumber Tycoon 2, Roblox High School, Jailbreak, Build a Boat For Treasure, Adopt Me!, World // Zero, Piggy, Berry Avenue RP, Blade Ball, Dress to Impress and Grow a Garden.

Clearing all 20 years unlocked "Year Infinity", with 20 more games that Roblox called the best of 2026 and beyond.

BedWars and RIVALS, the two games most of my videos are about, weren't in the main 20.

I didn't really play The Hunt myself. What I miss are the old Roblox egg hunts, which were really good. And honestly, I'm sad BedWars and RIVALS didn't make it.

For the event, anyone could also turn on a limited-time Classic theme in the app. It brought back the old-school Roblox logo, colors and font.

The birthday was the theme of RDC 2026 too. That's Roblox's developer conference, held in San Jose on September 11. The keynote was built around "Roblox at 20". Rebecca Cassel, the widow of cofounder Erik Cassel, came onstage at the end, and John Shedletsky, one of the first employees, was honored as well. Roblox also said players spent 29 billion hours on Roblox in the previous quarter.

The timeline, 2015 to 2026

2015: Lumber Tycoon 2 and an Xbox announcement

This is the year I started playing.

I started playing in class with a friend. One of the first games we got into was Lumber Tycoon 2, and we loved it.

One of the big new games that year was Lumber Tycoon 2 by Defaultio. Its fan wiki says it went public quietly in July 2015 as a test place. When it got its real name in August, it grabbed the #1 spot on the front page that same day.

Roblox was also heading to consoles. Roblox for Xbox One was announced on September 24, 2015, and Roblox announced the Xbox One app had launched in January 2016.

2016: R15 arrives

R15 avatars went into beta testing in February 2016 and were released to everyone on September 29, 2016. The name comes from the 15 body parts, compared to 6 for the older R6, so arms and legs can bend.

2017: A new logo, Jailbreak and Adopt Me!

On January 10, 2017, Roblox switched to a brand new logo, the first with the tilted square "O".

Two huge games came out that year. Badimo released Jailbreak on April 21, 2017. In July, Adopt Me! followed from Uplift Games (called DreamCraft back then).

2018: I started my channel

In 2018 I started making Roblox videos on YouTube.

My first video was a Lumber Tycoon 2 tutorial on getting Volcano wood. I recorded it with Roblox's built-in recorder on a really bad laptop, so it ran at about 20 FPS and was very laggy.

2021: BedWars, "experiences" and the big outage

In May, Roblox started calling games "experiences", and the Games page became "Discover".

Then came BedWars. A countdown billboard showed up in the Islands hub on May 21, 2021, and Easy.gg released BedWars on Friday, May 28. It launched with one mode (squads) and three maps.

BedWars is also where I later took ranked solo from Bronze all the way to Nightmare.

My BedWars stats: Nightmare rank, number 26 on the leaderboard. The climb took me about a week.

That October, Roblox went down for 73 hours, from October 28 to October 31, 2021. Roblox's own write-up traced it to its Consul system, the part of its servers that helps all the other services find each other. At the time, about 50 million people played Roblox every day.

2022: Goodbye "oof"

In July 2022, Roblox replaced the classic "oof" death sound because of a licensing dispute. A month later, the logo got a refresh too, with a new font and a bigger hole in the square "O".

For a BedWars memory from that year, I wrote a look back at Crypt's Trials.

2023: PlayStation and Quest

Roblox came to the Meta Quest store in September 2023. On October 10, 2023, it arrived on PlayStation as a PS4 app that also runs on PS5, and you could play with friends on other devices.

2024: RIVALS

RIVALS is a first-person PvP shooter by Nosniy Games. Roblox's game data lists it as created on May 26, 2024, and the RIVALS fan wiki gives June 28, 2024 as the public release. It won Best Shooter at the Roblox Innovation Awards in 2025, and again in 2026.

Lately I've been making RIVALS videos. If you play it too, the current RIVALS codes have their own page.

2025: Record crowds and the "oof" comes back

In June, Roblox said Grow a Garden had set the Guinness World Records mark for the most concurrently played video game, with 21.6 million players at once.

The "oof" was next. Roblox brought it back on July 18, 2025, as a sound creators could use, and on July 31 it became the default death sound again on computers and consoles. Phones got it over the following days, and PlayStation a bit later.

On August 23, 2025, Roblox hit a platform record of about 47.4 million people online at once. Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot were fighting for the top spot that weekend, and Steal a Brainrot became only the second Roblox game to pass 20 million players at the same time.

2026: Age checks, a native PS5 app and the birthday

Age checks for chat started in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in December 2025. On January 7, 2026, Roblox made them required everywhere chat is available. Chat is now split into age groups, and by default you can only talk to your own group and the ones right next to it.

On April 14, 2026, a native PS5 version launched, with up to 30% faster load times and DualSense haptics.

Then on June 16, age-based account types went global:

And in September, Roblox turned 20.

This year I'm also making my own Roblox game, +1 Nose to Escape. I wrote about how it started if you want the story.

The big games from this timeline, by the numbers

These visit counts come from Roblox's own game data on September 30, 2026, so they'll be higher by the time you read this.

GameCame outVisits (Sept 30, 2026)
Adopt Me!July 2017about 44.9 billion
RIVALSmid-2024about 18.4 billion
BedWarsMay 28, 2021about 11.7 billion
JailbreakApril 21, 2017about 8.06 billion

RIVALS has already passed BedWars in visits, even though it came out three years later.

20 years in

Looking back at this list, the two games most of my videos are about didn't exist when I started. BedWars came out six years later, and RIVALS nine.

My favorite era so far is my BedWars era. I loved playing BedWars ranked and the competitive side of it.
